Our Promise
We are all here for the mission; saving lives and ending breast cancer forever guides what we do each and every day at the Komen Minnesota Affiliate. For us, the women we serve are our highest priority in everything we do. Our local needs assessment is the primary driver of the Minnesota Affiliate’s funding decisions and community partnerships.
Locally incorporated, the Minnesota Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure raises funds through events like the Twin Cities and Brainerd Lakes Race for the Cure. Seventy-five percent of the money raised by the local Affiliate stays in Minnesota to fund life-saving programs that create access to breast cancer screening and treatment. The remaining twenty-five percent funds research on a national level, some of which supports breast cancer research right here in Minnesota at the University of Minnesota and Mayo Clinic.
For almost two decades, our Affiliate has partnered with the Minnesota Department of Health’s Sage Screening Program to fund screening programs that provide free mammograms to uninsured and underinsured women in all 87 counties of Minnesota. Last year alone, our Affiliate funded breast cancer screening and diagnostic services for more than 9,000 women. Specifically, we funded more than 3,300 mammograms, 6,000 computer-aided detection readings, 100 breast biopsies, and 300 ultrasounds.
We rely on your support to help us fund life-saving, breast-health programs right here in Minnesota.

- Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the boldest community fueling the best science and making the biggest impact in the fight against breast cancer.
- To date, we have invested more than $1.9 billion in research and life-saving community programs. We are the only breast cancer organization with a comprehensive approach that touches research, advocacy and community support.
- Research: Beginning with a single grant for $28,000 in 1982, we have now invested more than $610 million in research. We currently manage more than 550 active research grants totaling nearly $300 million. After touching every major advance in breast cancer science, Komen is now focused on innovative research to bring treatments from the lab to the bedside quickly.
- Community Programs: Komen’s network of Affiliates funds nearly 2,000 organizations providing education, screening, patient navigation and emergency financial support for those facing breast cancer worldwide.
- Annually we fund more than 600,000 screenings, and financial and emotional support programs for more than 100,000 women and men
Komen Achievement Snapshot
- Susan G. Komen for the Cure has changed how the world talks about and treats breast cancer (In 1982, people wouldn’t even say the words “breast cancer” aloud).
- A Komen grant has touched every major breast cancer breakthrough of the past 29 years.
- Funding for discoveries in genetics and biology has evolved into personalized, less invasive treatments for what was once a “one-treatment-fits-all” disease.
- Early stage breast cancers are virtually cured in the U.S. (The five-year survival rate for breast cancer that has not spread beyond the breast is now 98 percent compared to 74 percent in 1982.)
- Overall, breast cancer mortality rates have dropped by 31 percent since 1990.
- The Komen Advocacy Alliance has influenced U.S. federal and state decisions, fighting to ensure that women get access to the care they need.
