Grants
Komen Minnesota plays a special role in Susan G. Komen’s vision of creating a world without breast cancer. We ensure that all people, regardless of race, income, geographic location, sexual orientation or insurance status, have access to screening, and if diagnosed, to quality, effective treatment and treatment support services. While we have made great advances over the last several decades in understanding the causes of breast cancer, how it behaves in the body, and successful treatments, there are many people who still do not have access to regular mammograms or quality breast cancer treatment.
Susan G. Komen®, the world's largest breast cancer organization, awarded more than $100 million in research grants last year, representing the largest single-year investment in research in the organization's 26-year history and a 30 percent increase over the previous year’s award total of $77 million. The 2011 grants slate moves Komen closer to accomplishing its goal of investing another $2 billion in breast cancer research and community health programs by 2017.
Here in Minnesota, up to 75 percent of the funds donated remain here in Minnesota to cover every step of the breast health journey - from education, outreach, mammograms and diagnostics, to surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and material and financial support like meals, mortgage payments, child care, prosthetics and wigs. The remaining 25 percent of each dollar donated funds international research. In fact, next to the U.S. government, Susan G. Komen is the largest funder of breast cancer research in the world. A Komen grant has touched every major breast cancer breakthrough of the past 29 years.
Community Grants
The Community Profile is a needs assessment document that provides an overview of Komen’s grant-making priorities and the breast health needs in our service area.
Research Grants
25 percent of the net income from each domestic Affiliate supports the national Komen Grant Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific conferences around the world.
*Please note: Susan G. Komen is not a direct service provider. We do not provide funds directly to individuals for screening or treatment, nor do we determine individual eligibility, make referrals, or influence the screening or treatment decisions of the organizations that we fund.
